The Power of Excitement

On January 8, 2011, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network detected a tremor near Seattle, WA. Did this mean that another earthquake had hit the west coast? Was it the beginning of another eruption of Mount St. Helens? No, the tremor was not caused by either of these things. The tremor that was detected on that date was caused by the intense celebration of Seahawks fans as Marshawn Lynch rumbled off a 67-yard touchdown run during an NFL playoff game. The tremor came to be known as the “Beast Mode Quake,” referring to Lynch’s nickname, and it demonstrates the power of one of the most transformational forces known to man – excitement.

Excitement has two very important characteristics. First, excitement transforms the ordinary into extraordinary. When excitement is introduced into any situation, it elevates that situation to a much higher level. The second characteristic of excitement is that it is contagious. Excitement spreads like wildfire, leaping from one person to the next until everyone around is impacted. Perhaps you have been swept up in the excitement of the crowd as Thoroughbreds race for the finish line at the local track, or felt the surge of excitement as the limo carrying a favorite celebrity arrives before an adoring throng of fans. If so, then you have personal knowledge of the two characteristics of excitement!

How can you use excitement to transform your world? It is really quite simple. Surrounding yourself with people who are excited will turn your job, project, or other activity from mundane to amazing. You will find yourself getting caught up in their excitement, and never again will your responsibilities feel like a burden. Gone will be the drudgery of going through the motions day in and day out. Instead, every day will be filled with energy and enthusiasm. The world in which you function each day will be transformed into a wonderful, amazing place to live!

The problem with the idea of surrounding yourself with excited people is that most people do not get to choose who they work with every day. If you are in this situation, you may think that you cannot unleash the power of excitement to transform your world. If so, I have some great news for you! The very nature of excitement actually works to your advantage in this situation. As I have already stated, excitement is contagious. All you have to do to surround yourself with excited people is to approach each day with excitement. As you show enthusiasm and excitement about your task or project, that excitement will spread to those around you. Before you know it, you will be surrounded by people who are excited and your world will be transformed.

Now, you may be wondering how to approach your mundane, ordinary day with excitement. The key is to truly understand what you do each day. If you are a heart surgeon, then it is fairly easy to get excited about performing your life-saving work. But what if you work in the purchasing department of a pet food company? What can be exciting about ordering supplies to make dog food? I’m glad you asked! Think about what you are really doing every day. By ordering the supplies, you are ensuring that dozens (or perhaps hundreds) of people have what they need to keep working. This allows them to pay the bills, put food on the table, and take care of their family. You make it happen! Not only that, by finding the best deals on those supplies, you are increasing company profits. This leads to growth and expansion, meaning more jobs and a stronger economy.

Your impact does not stop there. Think about the people who purchase your company’s products to take care of their pets. Your work contributes to healthier pets, which bring joy and comfort to their owners. Studies have shown that pets can help people live longer, happier lives. This means that you are personally contributing to the quality and longevity of lives, both of animals and of people. How exciting is that? Every activity, from sweeping floors to flying fighter jets, from running a corporation to caring for a child, has an impact on the world. You matter, and what you do matters. And that, my friend, is something to be excited about!

Excitement turned an ordinary football game into the Beast Mode Quake Game. Excitement turns a group of strangers into a thunderous mob as horses race for the finish line. Excitement transforms a good team into champions, and it turns a mundane task into a joyous adventure. Unleash the power of excitement to transform your world!
